Final field hockey power rankings

holds up the championship trophy after defeated Champlain Valley to win the Division I state title for the second year in a row. (Brian Jenkins/For the Free Press)

With the titles handed out and the high school teams celebrating with team banquets, it time to five you my final top 10.

As predicted, top seeds and Rice took home the titles in Divisions I and II respectively, while emerged the winner in Division III for the first time since 1980.

Now we at the Free Press turn our attentions to the All State teams.

Feel free to leave thoughts on the season and on the upcoming All State selections in the comments section below.

1. (15 0 1): For the second year in a row, the Hornets finished at the top of D I and at the Authentic Carlos Rogers Jersey top of the power rankings. A dominant defense and opportunistic offense led past CVU for the title. Last week: Carlos Rogers Raiders Jersey 1

2. Rice (16 1): It took three tries, but the Green Knights finally captured a state title. Rice won its first D II championship in program history, with a very motivated senior class getting to celebrate after two years of heartbreak. Last week: 2.

3. Champlain Valley (11 4 1): The Redhawks finished the season in the D I final game, coming oh so close to upending James Jones Jersey undefeated . It was an impressive run for the team 11 seniors, who certainly went out with a bang. Last week: 4

4. (8 5 2): It was a return to contention for the Tigers this season, who climbed to the D I semifinals before bowing out to . was a team to watch this season and coach Megan Sears certainly proved she has the program back on track after a couple of down years. Last week: 10

5. (12 5): What a season for the Falcons, who edged out defending champ to capture the D III title. It was the first field hockey title for since 1980, a feat that definitely earns them a spot in the top 5. Last week: Bubble.

6. U 32 (14 3): The Raiders sat near the top of D II all season and out a scare into eventual champs Rice in a 2 1 loss in the title game. U 32 dropped only three games all season two came against Rice to stick in the final top 10. Last week: Bubble.

7. South (8 6): The Rebels dealt with a new cast of characters to start the year and a teacher strike taking away coach Anjie Soucy at the end of the season, but finished with a winning record for the 15th season in a row. Last week: 5.

8. Otter Valley (12 3): There was little separating No. 2 Otter Valley from No. 3 U 32 this season in D II. So little, in fact, that it took double overtime for the Raiders to get the upperhand on the Otters in the semifinals. But the Otters were a force in any division in the southern part of the state, taking Tarell Brown Raiders Jersey out D I, II and III teams all season. Last week: 7.

9. Bellows Falls (15 1): For the second year in a row, Bellows Falls suffered its only loss of the season in its final game of the season. After going undefeated in the regular season, the Terriers saw their season come to end in OT in the D III semifinals. But for the third year in a row, the Terriers entered the playoffs as the No. 1 or 2 seed, establishing them as a D III power. Last week: 3.

10. (10 7): It took an overtime upset of top seeded Bellows Falls, but got themselves back to the D III title game for the 14th time in the last 17th seasons. Probably considered a down year for the perennial contender, the Raiders still nearly captured another state crown, falling 1 0 to . Last week: unranked.

On the bubble: (9 6); (11 4); (9 7)

About Lauren Read

I have been covering high school sports for the Free Press since 2012. Before making the move to the Free Press, I covered high school sports for the Manchester Journal in Manchester, Vt. from 2009 to 2012. A native Vermonter, I graduated from Burr and Burton Academy in 2005, where James Jones Raiders Jersey I played lacrosse, ice hockey and soccer. in 2009, I returned to Vermont to cover my first love: sports.

I agree with Captain Obvious and his comments on the girls soccer final rankings, except the sexist part. This is not about being PC and fair, being warm and fuzzy. I was rather quiet during the season. Knowing the VPA rankings are very skewed due to schedules. But in playoffs the cream rises. Time to recognize it and face the Tarell Brown Jersey facts.

The top four I agree with. After that it seems a bit silly.

5 NCU? They had a good D3 season, but no wins against any D2 teams.

No offense to the D3 teams, but in the top 10?

The top D1 D2 teams are all closely matched. I wish we could see more games between them.

The top D3 can beat the Carlos Rogers Jersey middle D2, but would be a challenge to beat the top on a consistent basis. Likewise the middle D1 can beat the top D2, but consistently?

is far and away ahead of the pack and has been over the last two seasons. Yes, their final score was close (we stuck around to watch the first half) but controlled the play for 90% of the game. CVU had one shot. Tip your cap to them, they are the best team in D1 by a large margin. I feel the same way about Rice this year, but I am biased, of course. Would be interesting to pit D1 champ vs D2 champ and declare winner as Champion It never happen but would be interesting. I will say, the speed of the D1 final was quite a bit elevated vs D2 play. Cheers to all as it was a fun season.

Re: D III vs. D II. Otter Valley outplayed U 32 in regulation in the semifinal without its leading scorer. The Raiders ruled OT, for sure, but OV was the better team overall. A coach who played both teams agrees with that assessment. OV lost to D III Bellows Falls this season. In fact, Bellows Falls went 8 0 vs. D II and also beat Bratt twice, for what it worth. did not fare well vs. Rice, but beat Harwood. and did not play well vs. D II, for sure. Regardless, it is not necessarily correct to assume the top D III teams cannot compete vs. D II. Looks like the best team did not win D III, but that can be the nature of one and done postseason play in low scoring goalie sports.

Good goaltending kept games close and interesting all year! As far as the D1 Authentic James Jones Jersey final Knights is right that controlled the majority of play and had quite a few more corner attempts than CVU. However, CVU deserves a lot of credit for hanging tough and tying up the game. CVU goalie had large shoes to fill and she played really well this year. Congrats to Rice on a great season. Also congrats to NC on their win! As always power rankings among divisions is speculative and many of us don see enough of each division to really know. I certainly agree with Lauren 1 Authentic Tarell Brown Jersey 4 spots!
